Job Opening: Music Director, Bremerton Symphony Youth Orchestra

Duties and Responsibilities: The BSYO Music Director serves at the pleasure of the BSYO Board of Directors and reports artistically to the BSA Music Director and administratively to the BSA Executive Director, working closely with the BSA staff to implement BSYO Board policy.  S/he will work closely with the BSYO board of directors and parents of the BSYO to support the efforts of the organization.  The BSYO Music Director is responsible for making recommendations to the BSA Music Director that relate to the artistic goals of the BSYO and also work in concert with the Association toward fulfillment of its long-term plans.  As such, s/he is responsible for the supervision and quality control of the BSYO, its events, staff and members.

Performance: The BSYO Music Director, in consultation with the BSA Music Director, is responsible for the artistic and musical decisions concerning the Bremerton Symphony Youth Orchestra.  The BSYO Music Director conducts and prepares the BSYO for all rehearsals, concerts, and other events.  S/he selects repertoire for the BSYO, determines the rehearsal schedule, attends all membership auditions and determines seating in collaboration with the sectional coaches.  The BSYO Music Director seeks opportunities to recruit new players through local schools, private studios and other young musician organizations.  Working with the BSA Executive Director, s/he selects and contracts all BSYO coaches.  In addition, the BSYO Music Director will be responsible for making presentations to the community on behalf of the BSYO.

Requirements: The BSYO Music Director will be self-motivated with strong organizational skills.  S/he will work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, changing environment adhering to deadlines and maintain a positive professional work atmosphere. S/he will have a minimum education requirement of a bachelor degree preferably in music or equivalent experience.  ater Kitsap Peninsula and be available for all BSYO orchestra rehearsals/concerts, and special events.

Compensation: Part-time position $10,000, no benefits

Organization description: Now in its 3rd season, the Bremerton Symphony Youth Orchestra is an orchestra for young people in greater Kitsap County.  They currently rehearse each Sunday and perform approximately three concerts from September-May, with additional chamber music and other fund raising events.  This position will begin July 1, 2008.

Location: Bremerton is located in Northwest Washington State on the Puget Sound.
